Belle Glade

Belle Glade is a story about football and poverty. Two things that we can relate to in America. Belle Glade – nicknamed The Muck – is a small town of less than 20,000 people in an area of Florida know for sugar cane and the people who work those fields. It’s also a town that has produced wave after wave of major college and NFL players. Currently there are 11 active NFL players from Belle Glade.

But yet, Belle Glade is also one of the poorest places in the United States. According to the FBI in 2003, Belle Glade had the second highest violent crime rate in the United States. The actual unemployment rate is estimated by some government officials to be as high as 40%.

Under the leadership of Belle Glade resident and former University of Miami Football star, Randy Phillips, we are now taking it upon ourselves to write the story of Belle Glade as one of hope and a perseverance. We plan to build up and clean up Belle Glade, changing the fortunes of the children. We plan to unite those who are from Belle Glade, who can now make an impact. We are a football ‘family’ that will help lift up the families of Belle Glade. And we plan to build the Belle Glade brand as one that other towns with similar circumstances can look to for inspiration.
